Nexans powers-up Daydream Island
Nexans to Supply the Famous Holiday Resort with Submarine Energy Cables
Paris, April 9, 2002 - Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has been awarded a contract for the supply of 4,720 metres of 6.35/11kV, 3-core copper conductor, steel wire-armoured submarine energy cable to Daydream Island in Australia.
The contract was awarded to Nexans as part of a major redevelopment of the famous Queensland holiday resort. The installation of the cable now provides Daydream Island with a dedicated and reliable power supply that will meet the current and future power requirements of the five star resort.
Nexans is one of a select group of companies in the world able to manufacture one continuous length of cable and still meet the time critical deadline set by Daydream Island. The submarine cable, manufactured at the Nexans dedicated MV and HV energy cables facility in Germany, was produced, certified and delivered in only four months. Special containers were built to ship the cable from Germany to Australia in its entirety to ensure the integrity of the cable during transportation.
In November 2001, Downer RML began the extraordinary task of laying this almost five kilometre length of submarine cable from the Ergon point of supply at Coral Beach on the Australian Mainland across the ocean channel to Daydream Island. The cable was laid in trenches at depths of up to 40 metres and then covered with sand and silt. Where it lay directly on the seabed it was encased in concrete to provide security and stability. A Global Positioning System was used to plan the route of the cable, ensuring the cable was laid in an exact position, limiting any stresses on the cable due to rock formations or trenches in the seabed. The Environmental Protection Agency closely monitored the entire process to ensure that strict environmental guidelines were met at all times.
Terry Flynn, Project Manager for Downer RML, commented, "I was very impressed with the quality of Nexans' product, technical support and expertise, the delivery performance and the planning that went into the cable being delivered on site in A1 condition, and ahead of schedule."
Graham Wedge, the Engineering Manager for Daydream Island, said of the installation, "We were very happy with all aspects of the project and found the performance and expertise of the Nexans/Downer-RML partnership well above our expectations."
Yvon Raak, President of Nexans Energy Division, said, "This was the first order for submarine energy cable that Nexans' Australian subsidiary has received and it is proof that the local industry recognises the importance and ready availability of continuous submarine energy cable supported by a local team."
