Nexans to install the world's first 420kV XLPE submarine power cable for the Ormen Lange development
Paris, 10 January 2005 - Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has won a contract worth around Euros 15 million to manufacture and install the world's first 420kV XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) submarine power cable for the ongoing development of the Ormen Lange gas field on the Norwegian continental shelf. The customer is Statnett, Norway's state-owned transmission system operator.
"This very important project fits perfectly with Nexans' strategy of applying leading edge technology to customer solutions. Currently, no submarine power cable at this voltage level with XLPE insulation has been delivered, so we are beating our own world record." says Yvon Raak, Nexans' Executive Vice President, Europe Area. The previous record - also manufactured and installed by Nexans - was the delivery of a 170kV XLPE submarine cable delivered for the Horns Rev windmill farm (Denmark) project in 2002.
The submarine power cable system for Ormen Lange will consist of four cables, totaling 3.2 km in length, of which 2.2 km will be deployed at 200m below sea level. The cable will be manufactured at Nexans' Norway factory in Halden, and then transported to its destination and installed by the cable ship C/S Bourbon Skagerrak. The submarine power cable will be installed between the Norwegian mainland and the island Gossen, and will supply the gas processing plant with its energy needs.
Delivery is expected for late summer 2006.
Facts about Ormen Lange
