RIPS, a Nexans company dedicated to recycling, reuses 100 per cent of cable materials

Paris, November 28, 2006 – RIPS, a subsidiary of Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has developed unique expertise across the complete cable recycling chain. Thanks to its technological prowess, RIPS is today able to reuse 100 per cent of cable materials, including non-ferrous metals (copper or aluminum) and plastics, as well as plastic powder produced during grinding.

Technological prowess for end-to-end recycling
RIPSWith a grinding capacity of 20,000 tonnes per year, RIPS can offer its services to all companies owning discarded cables or cable waste. In partnership with its customers/suppliers, RIPS develops turnkey solutions covering the whole cable waste recycling process, including collection and transportation (via piggyback train), the mechanical on-site processing of metals (stripping and cutting of reeled cables), and the grinding and reuse of cable waste.

At the end of this process, customers/suppliers are paid according to the value of the waste produced. RIPS converts cable waste and non-ferrous metals into secondary raw materials, such as copper and aluminum granules, which can be directly reused in production.

Ecological processing of waste
RIPS ensures ecological processing of waste throughout the recycling chain, in strict compliance with the latest regulations in force. On a scale ranging from 0 to 4, the company has moved up from level 0 (waste disposal in a technical burial center) to level 3 (waste material reuse) in less than two years. RIPS has therefore significantly improved its performance, especially by finding an alternative to dumping its plastic powder.

RIPS’ various recycling processes are closely monitored and guaranteed as per ISO 9001 and 14001 standards. Furthermore, throughout its processes, the company complies strictly with environmental protection requirements and sustainable development commitments.

A second life for cable waste
These high-quality end-products are packaged to make them readily usable in many industrial applications. For example, recycled plastics can be used in the manufacture of outside structures, such as curbs, or as additives in bituminous mixes for road building.

Processing by RIPS enables waste collected from manufacturing companies or network operators to be recycled and get a second life..

Ecodesign
RIPS helps Nexans to control its entire manufacturing process, from metalworking to the total reuse of cable components, with the possibility that they might in future be used as secondary raw materials for the Group’s own cable production.
